Funding interdisciplinary research to fill knowledge gaps and pave the way for new approaches to managing UK marine environments
The Sustainable Management of UK Marine Resources programme (SMMR) is dedicated to bringing together marine scientists, policy makers, industry representatives, and wider stakeholders to build a research community that bridges the gap between science and policy.
We have led SMMR’s communications since its inception – crafting strategies, developing branding and web presence, facilitating stakeholder input, driving policy engagement, and delivering two outstanding annual conferences.
The real joy of SMMR comes in seeing the impact that its six interdisciplinary funded projects have had. These projects each address two strategic priorities identified by UK policy makers, and span an impressive range of areas – from coastal community resilience to seagrass restoration and Marine Spatial Planning. We’ve worked closely with the projects to align their efforts with SMMR’s central communications strategy, developing materials – from infographics to policy briefs and building-sized murals – that celebrate their individual research and impact while maintaining the common thread – and cohesion – of the Programme as a whole.
